after last night's practice i realised there's a glimmer of hope? maybe yujia's right about working miracles.......

still slowly working towards the target of selling out my tickets, slowly, i will hit it!

starcraft 2 is awesome, and i'm going to buy a new graphics card to make it even more awesome! and i'm really looking forward to Heart of the Swarm! haha the soundtrack's like a film score, quite epic!

the Berceuse is almost complete! hopefully it'll have a positive impression on the performers as well as the audience!

hopefully peiwen's brass quintet will receive positive views! it's rare to have young talent like her having the guts to put up a performance of her work, although she's new in this field! well done pei wen you have thumbs up from me!

i still feel unready for the recital :\ need more practice!!!

maybe i have really improved after the past year of stagnation, hmm new concepts have worked! my range is expanding now, i dont fear high notes as much as last time, and my air management is better...maybe it's a sign of better things to come! although i think i would not reconsider doing trumpet as my major instead of composition for my university education.

but whatever it is, i have to thank all my friends around me who have been giving me alot of moral support, whether you know it or not! thank you all so much!

i must get back to the Berceuse, got a deadline to meet!

Congratulations to AMB, RIWE, RGSSB and CGSSB for their successful SIBF 2010 performances!

I think I'm quite lucky, to be able to perform more exciting stuff that I could only once dream of performing. Russlan and Ludmilla Overture :D Candide Overture :D Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra :D haha excited much :D

I'm going to have a pretty eventful 2nd half of the year, hopefully I'm selected to go Japan and Germany as well!

interestingly, Mahler's 2nd has been lingering in my head for the past few days haha, it doesnt sound like something that usually lingers. Mahler's 1st never lingered after i first heard it or after my first performance of it...oh well!

it feels strange, a positive kind of strange, to wake up this early on an off day, but yeah i need to go work out this morning to like boost my metabolism rate before the makan session later, at least some damage control measures yeah =D

whoa it has been an uber long weekend..thu afternoon - today! i'm glad it wasnt wasted, alot of stuff done. Played for what would probably be the most epic concert in years to come, i guess it has really changed my life for the better, i have a more positive outlook on life now (: and i made significant progress with the soundtrack for paul's (NOT THE OCTOPUS) animation.

damn if only i had a friend called mani, i'd make them pose together for a shot!

today wasnt exactly a good day, after lunch i cooled down, didnt warm up properly and went straight into parade, bad idea huh, kept splitting and cracking ): then at the very last stepping off, i totally missed it and, ugh total disaster on my part, i was in a daze, it was really beyond the limit of my concentration already, dunno why so tired also!

tonight's going to be a lonely night..maybe i should just go and sleep?

went back to WSSS today to mug, really nice to be back there after a 2 month hiatus! saw some old friends like the daily LH744 that parks at the F side gates, some SQ772s, several MI a320 buggers, oh and i saw a garuda 734 take off at breakneck speed as though it was on afterburners! i swear it was speeding!

anyway the t2 aviation gallery is still a nice place to mug after the renovation. but reading up all the theory stuff really saturates my brain, i really cannot tahan words ): but it was nice to go back to doing differentiation again haha! i can't believe i still can remember my maths!

and urgh i dont like the idea of full dress rehearsals at nee soon ):

anyway, turture weeks coming up ahead, 6 more rehearsals and one actual to go sigh

it's almost halfway through the year, and i would like to self reflect on achievements that mean something to me over the past 5 months haha!

Jumped >243cm for standing broad jump
Passed 2.4km run
Climbed 2 mountains, Mt Ophir (1276m) and Mt Batur (1717m)
More or less paid for my own holiday to Bali
Paid for my own phone bills (high time i do so anyway)
Took some really awesome photos
Improved my trumpet playing (i really think i play better than at the start of the year, but still alot to work on D:)
Composed a solo work for clarinet of 4.5min duration in 3 days (really amazed me too)
Accepted appreciation from people concerning my musicality (high time i do that too)
Celebrated my birthday overseas with 2 great friends
Fell in love
Played a solo on parade
Survived a Garuda Indonesia flight, on one of their older planes.
Composed a march for Band A (not to be performed, sadly)

I cant really think of anymore hmm =\

my condolences to fadli, stay strong abang! sometimes i really admire fadli, nizam and chester, for they can stand so strong after losing one parent. i really cant imagine myself in their shoe, i think i'll be really lost and like, i don't know. thank goodness my parents, despite their old age, are still pretty much healthy!

maybe i should take half day off tml come home and continue kim's clarinet piece! hoho it's actually taking shape quite well XD

aiya what a waste! like for once i thought i was going to nail it! zzz!

anyway, my days are going relax by abit slightly, and i'll have more time to think about the conducting auds on 12 june, and i still don't know what to choose hmm!

anyway i'm going to give myself a 2 day break from playing, my lips feel overworked, 2 day break to reset my embouchure slightly, recondition on sunday and monday good to go for full band! shall whack the saints, it'll be really fun!

the time has come again for me to do HQBO duty, but i'm not complaining, because i've been getting off for every single HQBO duty i've done this year :P (1 public holiday, 2 sundays, and band reporting super later today) isnt this awesome!!!

i'm feeling weird

2 years ago i started treating music from the composers point of view (after all, i'm a composer myself) to find out what the composer is trying to say, so that we can dish out not art that we create, but rather art that we are the medium in which it is transferred through to the audience. It made me think alot, because i've learnt how to perform music in a way it would toy with the listeners expectations the way the composer would have wanted. The thing is, it starts becoming complicated, and suddenly i see so many things happening at once, and i realise there is just too much detail that affects the whole big picture in general.

it just brings me to think, have i become too sensitive to musical detail for my own good, such that when i perform/listen, i look out for so many things at the same time, and i seem to be easily displeased by my own playing, despite praises from other people.

sadly, it is not something i can change. people say i set my standards too high, but they fail to see that i don't set standards, i just listen, and whatever irks/pleases me, irks/pleases me, it's just personal preference, although i try as much as possible to appreciate whatever goes into my ears.

and to those who think i don't enjoy music, think again, for you don't know me well enough to know that music is my soul, and the lack of enjoyment of music, is the lack of my soul, and without music, i am an empty shell.

and that has yet to happen, and i hope will not happen.

i'm blogging from the harmony room com (:

i passed my 2.4km run at last! like after 4 years of failing! i owe this success to many people! this week has been good i guess, really nice week! but i really dont want this week the end =\ i'm really afraid of friday, i will miss rwinds and vch!!

last night was amazing! truly amazing..never felt so touched playing music before! how sad that it's the last prac =\ the band finally played music, it's like, just awesome! and yesterday i had new found confidence in my playing, it couldnt have come at a better time! i just hope this good streak carries on till friday, i would really want to make my last performance at VCH avery memorable one!

i really hope we touch some hearts!

i shall take half day today, go home and hopefully start writing the YOG music, otherwise really no progress on it at all ):

That day, i was playing some airliner identification quiz on Airliners.net, and some of the quiz questions were quite interesting:

but 2 months of missing rwinds, and that means.............SIGH nvm

hopefully today is the turning point! for both my playing and my life! the start of the day was still rpetty bad, but in the end it turned out well, i really hope it's rebound time :D

This is almost a month late, but yeah here it goes: Bali 2010!

DAY 0

Went to changi airport and awaited the arrival of my two travel companions, aaron and calvin. As usual calvin screwed up our timing plans, so we had to rush like mad, my parents got pissed at calvin (serves him right hurhur) a sendoff party consisting of paul, hafiz and shuotian came along to join in the fun. Dinner was a quick bite at popeyes!

and then we were off into the airside! went straight for the gate, made a few prank cum farewell calls! received a few bday cards and a present, great surprise! as long as i dont repeat last years drowning feat again, it should be okay haha xD

We boarded our flight, said our prayers (we really needed them considering it was CI), and left for surabaya. Thankfully we touched down safely.

Found the garuda office, and saw what's right beside. Couldnt really decide which was the lesser of the two evils, but slept outside here anyway. freaking uncomfortable, due to the awesome heat and the royal indonesian air force bloodsuckers squadron.

DAY 1

woke up at about 4am and started our pre-takeoff charging of batteries - handphones, cameras, laptop. technically we were unintentionally trying to overload the power plug.

the airport is full of intricate Indonesian wood carvings. amazing stuff man!

and so we met up with our even more treacherous carrier, this one was really gambling with our lives, even much more so than china airlines!

soon we departed surabay, upon leaving we saw this tiny plane wreck in the middle of nowhere, which made me think of unpleasant endings to this flight, but oh well we left safely anyway!

on board breakfast was provided...in ration boxes!!!!

and how very interesting indeed! even more cheapo than out-rations i tell you! haha

flying over the eastern end of java, we saw some volcanic features. these are tiny cinder cones..how cute..

then we went past the Ijen volcano complex, the star being Gunung Merapi, which shouldn't be confused with the famous Merapi volcano in central Java. Too bad the famous acidic crater lake was shrouded in clouds!

Gunung Agung loomed over the horizon of Bali upon approach!

we descended into denpasar airport, passing by several resorts.

on touchdown, our 737-400 BOUNCED!!! but anyway we still landed safely, and the only plane parked at the international terminal was the beautiful golden bird! no better welcome guard huh!

and so we survived 2 of the worlds most notorious airlines in terms of safety record, not bad huh!

when we alighted, this merpati came in and parked on the apron beside us. freaking loud i was going deaf trying to take a video of it coming in hahaha

and so we left the airport in a Chevrolet taxi, how cool huh!

welcome to indonesia (technically we reached indonesia a good 7 hours earlier)! we began our journey to the hotel to deposit our stuff. Roads there were not as developed as i thought, in fact pretty chaotic, traffic lights were put only at the biggest of junctions. the average car speed there is around 30-40km/h. but we made it to our home for the next 3 days in no time - Hotel Vilarisi

after depositing our luggage at the hotel, we decided to go for a short exploration walk, and dropped by this restaurant for breakfast. They proved that eggs had nerves, for they scream when cooked xD SCREAMBLED EGGS!!!!!

started off with some refreshing watermelon juice! it's true, the fruit juices there taste different! they have a more natural taste, possibly due to the freshness of the fruit? fruit juice is a must try when you're there though!

i ordered some chicken friend noodles, very nice! cant remember how much it cost though, around standard food court price. It's not true that stuff here are much cheaper. In fact they cost about the same even after conversion.

talking about cost, interestingly, in contrast with singapore, the products at convenience stores like this one are significantly cheaper!

Balinese people are highly devoted to their religion, and they put offerings like these at the doorsteps of their shops or altars like this. EVERYDAY MIND YOU. EVERY SINGLE DAY! religion would cost them alot man!

a good example of the screwed up traffic system..a two way road that is only one lane wide, and here u can see a common problem arising. usually the driver nearer to the main road would back out though..

we made our way to the beach. .almost killed my camera, but i won't say how, it's too hard to explain what we were trying to do haha!

we carried out our tradition of beach sand drawings...yeah it looks very familiar huh!

after some time we decided to head for the bali bombing memorial, and saw these free maps provided by various tourist agencies planted around the alleys of kuta.

and so we reached the bali bombing memorial! nice design huh!

we then made our way back to the hotel...the kuta region didnt have petrol kiosks at all, something we initially didnt notice, until we saw these petrol in vodka bottles for sale..haha!

Murphy's Law decided to strike, when we went back to the hotel. After a call to check, we found out that our original plan to climb Mt Agung was not possible due to festivities, so we had to last minute scramble a Mt Batur plan. it was quickly settled, thankfully, and while we were thinking of what to do for day 2. we walked towards the beach to watch sunset. we came across this tour agency offering some tours. we decided to go for a dolphin watching tour, and bargained a good price for it :P

and so here is mt agung, eluding us with a veil of clouds below the top half of the mountain. we awaited sunset on the sands of Bali...

it was one of the most beautiful sunsets i've seen in my life, i must admit..looks like sunsets with wide expenses of sea go quite well together! somehow sun and sea combis don't go as well for sunrises, i dont know why hmm!

the post-sunset glows really amaze me sometimes...but anyway we retired to our hotels for an early night. Had to wake up at 2am or so, pickup at 2.30am But Murphy's Law really enjoys bugging us....

DAY 2

we woke up to the sounds of the doorbell and when i looked at the time i was like SHEEEETTTTTZZZZ it was like 2.45 wtf?!?! so we literally turned out and got ready in about 5-10min and went down to meet our driver! it was a long journey through the night. Bali's significantly cooler in the mountainous regions at night. passing through Begudul, our driver turned off the aircon and opened the windows. free aircon! really nice and refreshing though! calvin and aaron were sleeping most of the journey but i was staying awake to enjoy the nighttime atmosphere of a rural region! new experience (: soon we reached our destination - Lovina beach

we departed on our boat..went out into the open sea..it was a good 3-4km away from the shore!

when the sun rose, the mountains in the distance looked really pretty!

and then the dolphins appeared! they are very shy though! they dive for some time when boats approach! oh well, it has been a lifelong ream of mine to see wild dolphins anyway!

on the way back to shore, we went over some coral reefs! pretty! clear water!!!

and that's us enjoying ourselves!!!

so we hit shore, and i saw this chicken, not sure rooster or hen, but i think it's a hen, no crown! it was fighting with another one, but by the time i adjusted my camera settings this hen won the battle already, so there it is standing tall and proud!

we were then provided with breakfast and freshly brewed balinese coffee! everything here tastes different u know, including the coffee! it's not as bitter, has a more intoxicating aroma. and then me and calvin decided to take a picture of this:

housefly enjoying breakfast! for some reason it looks really happy to me! like sucking on the sugar and turning it around now and then!

we then made our way back to kuta, passing through the northern city of Singaraja, not bad ah something close to singapore xD one of the rare few places one sees traffic junctions in bali, and they have countdown timers for both green and red lights!

on the way back, we went past this crater lake. It's hard to imagine this was the site of a cataclysmic volcanic event millions of years ago!

and then we saw a petrol station! another rare commodity on this island!

this is a pretty nice scene actually, a traditional market, and a woman with a basketful of bananas! how exciting!

when we reached our hotels, we all fell dead asleep, and we did plan to watch sunset again actually, but unfortunately the weather was unfriendly, it rained the whole evening. we then did our preparations for the Mt Batur climb the next morning..i think we pretty much created jet lag for ourselves without moving out of singapore's time zone. our reveille was 12.30 the next morning, with a 1.30am departure to the mountain. interestingly none of us felt sleepy around 11pm, although i strongly encouraged our slumber party to begin by 9pm. oh well.

and so we woke up, or maybe we didnt even sleep, but anyway we didnt require a turnout this time round thankfully, and we had time for some instant noodles and SPAM!!!!! hahaha and then we began our 2 hour or so drive to the base of Mt Batur. once again, i didnt sleep on the way, was admiring the night sky, it was awesomely clear and starry :D after some time, we reached the mountanous region of the gigantic caldera, wher ethe town of Kintimani was situated. when i saw Mt Batur's silhouette, i couldnt help but drop my jaw and go wow. for some reason it looked much more majestic than mt ophir, although the vertical gain was only about 700metres!

we arrived at start of the trail, met up with our guide. he was quite fluent in english, i was glad we had such a great guide! quite knowledgeable too, as we were about to find out. what really amazed me was the expense of clear night sky coupled with the star filed sky..it was absolutely amazing! OH AND WE WERE BREATHING OUT SMOKE HAHA!!! it wasnt like winter cold, but due to the high humidity of the region, coupled with the lower than usual temperatures (it was around 16 degrees according to the guide) it was relatively easy for this phenomenon to occur.

we began our hike, passing by various plantations along the way..volcanic soil's good for agriculture (:

we were armed with headlamps and climbing sticks! night climbs are nice and comfy! it was trickier and slightly more technical than ophir though, for there were no steps and hardened lava was rough and uneven.

soon we reached the sunrise watching platform at the lower part of the crater rim. took some photos of my companions with the background!

the sun's rays went all the way to the other side of the sky!

it was a really beautiful sunrise! life felt really awesome at that instant, i momentarily forgot all of my troubles!

the crater of a volcano never really seemed big until i reached the rim! it's actually humongous! and this is considered a small volcano!

the summit was monkey infested during the morning hours when the bulk of the tourists are there happily giving them a free breakfast!

clearly our obsession with flies didn't end at Lovina xD

this volcano is very much alive, and erupted quite a few times in recent history. this huge steam cloud is proof that the volcano's nowhere near dead. yellow alert level 1 is assigned to it for a reason you know!

a lava plain resulted from a recent effusive eruption.

we climbed on to the true summit, and the view was pretty breathtaking with the morning clouds below us!

we reached the summit, at an elevation of 1717m above sea level, and overlooked a crater lake. Mt Abang, a taller mountain belonging to the larger caldera rim was just across the lake, and hiding behind it, the elusive Mt Agung! Took some pictures, one of which involved the RJC flag but sadly i dont have a copy of it, as well as one with kimberlyn's card as i promised xD

Volcanic rock! the lava from plate boundary volcanoes are usually thick and cooler, which makes it harder for gases inside to escape before it hardens. this results in porous rocks like these! they are quite light, and some of them are supposedly less dense than water! rocks floating on water..how cool huh!

we began our descent, and slid down the volcanic soil as though we were skiing haha! was a really fun descent at the first part!

passed by a fumarole...it was belching out steam! but it wasnt like boiling hot, in fact it was pretty nice warm and comfy, other than the fact that the water vapour condenses extremely quickly, making my hand wet in no time. interestingly when the guide put a lit cigarette at the mouth of the fumerole, the amount of condensed vapour increased and intensified the plume!

soon we reached the base and made our way back to the hotel. on the way back, we bought babi guling (roasted suckling pig) set lunches. it was disappointing though, considering it was supposed to be a local delicacy, it didnt taste special or very nice, it tasted pretty normal =\

and this would be the last sunset we'll see on this beautiful island, this time from the hotel balcony! We had a good dinner - i ate some really good fish that evening, and rested for the next day, which was going to be really eventful, or should i say, unexpectedly eventful.

DAY 4

we woke up to a brand new day, it's going to be just a little R&R and then our 2 flights back, the highlight supposedly being the business class flight, which for me will be 2 firsts, being in business class and a 747-400. or is it? but anyway, we began our R&R walk around, shopping for gifts and stuff, with whatever little amount of cash we had left, which was really little actually!

the unavoidable, seriously, SEA is infested with this red tide!

and we walked past this sumo diver!!!

and this bike with the american flag laid over it..really reminds me of the top gear motorcycle episode!

after some shopping, we then walked back to the hotel, checked out, and then made our way to denpasar airport, which is totally not in the city of denpasar actually, but oh well!

Murphy's Law strikes back again, and this time for a grand finale. i cant believe i used the words grand finale, there's no better way to put it, c'mon u gotta agree with me on this. CALVIN DROPPED HIS PASSPORT IN THE CAB! i told him to check for stuff left behind sumore, but he probably put it in his breast pocket, checked for stuff, then dropped it before closing the cab's doors. thank goodness we were transiting at Jakarta, where the singapore consulate is situated, the ONLY singapore consulate in the whole of indonesia. so he flew with us to Jakarta.

we boarded our 737-900ER, and there were prayer pamphlets on board!!!! hahaha naturally we did our prayers, for we were sitting at the last row of a plane that had a high chance of tailstriking, unless in the hands of a skilled pilot.

as we taxiied out, the weather turned gloomy, and it started raining. during the takeoff roll, i swear i felt us dipping down when the plane rotated, and i was like "PLEASE DONT TAILSTRIKE" and fortunately we didnt. it was kinda nerve wrecking! throughout the flight, we could see our pilot avoiding a few storm cells, but i think after some time he got pissed and just flew straight through them. i mean, turbulence can be fun, but flying through a storm just like that's way too unprofessional man!!!

and so we landed in CGK safely, and then murphy's law decided to give an encore. i stupidly left my tent in the hand luggage compartment -.- it was quite funny because at first i went up the wrong plane to retrieve my bao bei, but eventually i managed to get it back so yay!

and so calvin proceeded to the jakarta consulate to settle his documents that would allow him to come back to singapore. we provided him some cash for his extended stay in indonesia.

aaron and i then proceeded to check in our baggage and went through the customs and went straight for the business class lounge!!!

yeah this was the ticket into the business class lounge, whee! they had some tasty food there, and nice fresh juices! their soups were the star though, really tasty soups!

and so we boarded our last flying machine..or should i say, a real monster! the 747-400 is so huge haha when i stepped in i was like whoa huge difference from the 777s! went into the business class cabin and was amazed at the amount of legroom we had. in fact it was way too much leg room for my comfort! like so much open space! and i know abtzy feels the difference in seat width, but honestly i felt no difference -.- the only thing i really enjoyed about the seat was it's ability to convert into a flat bed! which was really cool and fun!

the lone spaceship captain style seat, quite fun huh! take off was really fun, i could really feel the monstrosity of this plane upon rotation, and for some reason we went into an insane climb. but the power of this beast is really something to behold, magnificent indeed!

soon we were served some pasta like stuff with fish and ratatouille! nice food (:

and that's the two of us in our seats! we touched down way too soon though, but i really enjoyed the flight! thanks aaron for the upgrade!

and so that concludes a really fun journey to a really fun place, with really fun things happening, although i doubt murphy was ever a fun person, but in all i gained alot from this trip. last minute decision making also played a huge role in making this trip more or less a success, (it's an amb thing, i swear) and it was really one of the best birthdays i've had in my life!

oh well, still considering the SMU KL exchange thing, but oh well XD

today's journey home was quite eventful! an exciting race between an SMRT167 and an SBS132

let the Singapore Grehnd Pricks begin!

the race begins when 132(blue) approaches the bend into upper thomson road in pole position while 167(red) is holding at the traffic light. square markers mark the point when 132 stopped and 167 almost seemed to be able to overtake with ease (and almost effectively winning the race at the thomson plaza bus stop when i can get off and hop onto 132, which will definitely call there) unfortunately some kuku has to press the bus stopping button 10m away from the bus stop.

132 gains a huge upper hand by going past the sin ming road junction just before the traffic light light turns red. sadly, red lights seemed to greet 167 at every junction along this stretch, giving 132 a humongous advantage.

the humongous lead makes catching up impossible. I take a gamble and pray that 167 can miraculously go ahead and reach far east plaza before 132 does. 132 keeps the lead for the entire thomson road stretch too.

132 encounters it's first major trap, the turn into whitley road (long slip road entry into PIE) where at peak hours involves a 2-cycle traffic light long queue. 167 manages to catch up and eventually overtake.

the two buses split up. 167 has the advantage of slightly less bus stops, but faces heavier traffic conditions at a major junction turning into moulmein road. 132 has the advantage of fairly clear traffic, fewer traffic lights, but faces a 2nd major trap when turning into scotts road.

the scott's road trap delays 132 alot. 167 reaches far east first! muahaha! and epic end to the Singapore Grehnd Pricks!

frankly, it was pretty nerve wrecking, high adrenaline and heart stopping race...

went to some chinese restaurant thingum at Raffles Hotel (hoho) 7 course lunch for $12 yay!

the best chilli i've ever eatn in my life! it's only mildly spicy, but has ~~shirim~~ shrimp paste in it so it's very fragrant and it goes well with almost anything!

the glass that is so cool because of it's shape! cute right!

OMM having exciting stuffs this and next year! i'm glad that i finally get to perform some of my dream works..like since sec 2/3 i've always wanted to play them :D OMM's good..realises many of my dreams (scheherazade and rach 2 were two of them)

last but not least! to my junior Rachel Phua! i hope you'll do well for the rest of your exams and performing with you has been excellent experience (:

now when i look back in time, i realised what Dr Lee Tian Tee said during JCBandfest was a very sad reality:

"They don't practise. You have to practise them"

yeah it's really sad. like REALLY sad only those with real passion and a sense of responsibility will ever practise their own parts before rehearsal.

and for RWinds, i wouldnt be surprised if most of the members are the kind who really come to RWinds to play music for fun only, and like sightread every single prac, in the end qianhui's rehearsals are like inefficient because he cant do much if the members themselves don't do their own preparation! and when u sightread, most of the time you wont bother about anything else other than your own score..u wont follow the conductor/listen out to other people and tune/be sensitive to musicality and balance.

yes it's true that people that have other things to do, other commitments, but still it's a responsibility that they've chosen to take, then why not do a good job? it's really sad to see that not the whole band isnt putting in the effort to prepare for their parts. if they don't turn up for rehearsals, but still come prepared, then at least they've taken the initiative to prepare their parts before coming!

well today i was told straight in the face that i sounded bad

haha sometimes why i like staff selamat is because he's truthful and sincere to help me improve!

at least now i confirm my doubts about me sounding bad (i always thought so, but people claim otherwise..other than wenrong, who is tactful enough to keep quiet but agree when i tell him that i sound bad, and of course a certain coughahemcough that i shouldn't mention hurhur) my sis claims that i'm too hard on myself, but it's probably because i know i can do better and i'm either just suay (i seldom blame my bad playing on misfortune, although it DOES happen at times) or i'm not focussing enough

interestingly the past few days i've been reflecting alot on my current musical status. i may be a professional musician (by status, not by standard) but i'm not being like one. sometimes i feel that i'm not fulfilling my potential.

even for rachel's O-lvl thingum. i might not be the one being tested, but if i play badly i might affect her, and my poor playing can affect the invigilators overall impression and marks given too. i dont want to jeopardise her chances of doing well, but i still dont know why i am so inconsistent =\

i'm beginning to feel my musicianship slipping away from my life? i've already set my mind on doing music in my life, but why do i still have doubts about myself?

i rmb jinhao telling me this quote once that if u really want to be a musician, u cannot have second thoughts because to succeed as a musician you cannot have any doubts and your mind has to be really set on it.

i never knew revisiting music could let u discover new stuff about it (:

anyway it has been a long time since i posted! haha i've been feeling really lazy to update this blog recently haha..oh well

guitar hero 5 has cool functions..u can even play on party mode and you wont die on it haha! tried it at pauls house! really fun hahaha

anyway after doing reflections on ode to VCH, as well as having garnered feedback from many people..there's this general agreement that french portrait was a better, more coherent, and more well composed work..and i can't help but agree! now let's zoom into both works and see why!

in french portrait, there were only 2 motifs, 1 main theme and 1 side theme which was undeveloped. result was a coherent work that managed to portray the imagery intended, with little amount of basic musical material..which equates to effecient and effective use of my motifs.

also the harmony was much more controlled, and i managed to actually sectionalise the piece and give it and arch form structure by using key centres (C - G - devt - G - C) plus i used simple harmonies, yet i still managed to give the work life..equates to effective use of harmony

basically, without realising the good i've done, i actually fulfilled a recent dream a year ago..to create beauty with simplicity.

then we move on to ode to VCH

it was supposed to be a proof that i have grown as a composer, to have improved over the year, with a better grasp of harmony and musica material usage. but then everything just went wrong

let's begin with motifs. now the idea of this ode, was not to create any imagery..it was just music to be appreciated on it's own..much like our two overtures by dr kelly tang. what i requested was for various people to donate motifs and i collect them all, and try and build themes with these motifs, or to create a collage of motifs (like how debussy does for some of his works)

okay so mistake number one was the idea itself! now building a collage of motifs could have sounded like an easy job, but it meant there was going to be a huge problem with coherency of the work, which i did sense during the composition progress, but i thought at first it was just the usual composition paranoia. but after gathering comments my worst fear was confirmed haha! until a few nights ago i realised what debussy did to his collage that i didnt which allowed his to sound more coherent, which brings us to the next point.

harmony. what my piece lacked was sectionalism defined by harmony. this unfortunately destroyed whatever chance of the potential coherency that can be produced in 6 minutes of music containing many motifs, many side motifs and many themes because of the amount of permutations of the motifs to produce various themes.

and speaking of harmony, i was too experimental and too daring in using interesting non key centered harmonies this time round. this resulted in complicated harmonies that don't flow well, and dont give a strong sense of direction. after all it is better to let the listener expect something, then deny him of it to keep his interest aroused, rather than to let him be lost.

well there is ONE good thing i've gotten out of the composition of ode to VCH. that is i have learnt my lessons (the hard way, unfortunately) at least now i have a clear idea of what to do and what not to do!

today is self-criticism day yay!

hmmm singapore's next significant eclipse event would be a partial one on 3rd august 2016, starting at 7.22am, maximum at 8.23am with magnitude 0.89, which is even better than this year's CNY eclipse of magnitude o.8! (see my january archives! i took pictures!)

and we will get totality for an annular eclipse on 26th december 2019!!! starts at 11.26am local time, maximum at 1.23pm (whoa nice timing) with magnitude of 0.97! totality is going to last for 2min 6 seconds...

haha and our next total eclipse is october 7th 2135 so i'll be happily lying in my coffin by then -.-

bandersonics is over! thats about halfway thru my concert season! still got 2 orchestral concerts to prepare for ahaha

anyway i think i played decently for the concert, but it was rather immature playing =\ i need to er find a way to be less emotional/high/no control when i play...and also a way to keep my chops in shape throughout the concert =\

and omg my solos were all badly played D: i feel sorry for mr lim coz i made an anticlimatic mispitch at a point of great emotional intensity..damn killjoy!!!!

i'm just hurt at how people can say "aiya graduation only, anyhow play la!"

i'm just upset at how people fail to see every performance as important as the other, and to put in their utmost effort, because there are people doing so, and because of these selfish people, the whole thing falls apart and the effort put in by people who are serious will just go down the drain

i don't care if it's just internal, or just graduation, or we're performing to an audience that could possibly smaller than our batch itself, but it's still a performance after all

a mature musician is one who doesn't evaluate the importance of performances, but one who treats all of them equally seriously, that is music making with professionalism!

only when we treat the music seriously then we can really have fun and enjoy the music..

went for the philyouth - SSO concert! another great phototaking opportunity but batteries decided to give up really prematurely..so here's what i think should be worth appreciated (:

philyouthon stage..miking was badly done, but the band played well (:

anyway i played for vj strings the 3rd time in a row, but this time it was rather special! this concert brought back a few people closer to me, like sweejin, whom i remember auditioning for RJ DSA, and getting accepted but screwed up RJ took only sports that year, then i also met rachel tan, who is wenrong's junior, and i taught her like 2 years ago for their SYF also! I also accomplished a not so amazing feat of playing 1st for everything which i totally died!

sigh i'm getting slightly stressed up over graduation bleahhhhh

i'm halfway through my ordeal hahaha

hmm listened to a very refreshing intepretation of tchaik 5th, but unfortunately the 2nd movement wasn't played with much meaning? SSO made it so much more bittersweet! but the brasses were fantastic..like for once harmony in the trombone melodies at the codettas of the 1st mvt could be heard! i mean like WOW! it's just so wow! really interesting intepretation haha caught my ears throughout (:

grieg piano concerto just reminds me of "air on banana" xD

haha and xiaojia was telling me how much she loved rach piano cnocerto no. 2 also..aww so sad why did u miss the lucerne festival orch performance on okto! adng pple u all shld watch okto every saturday (or at least check out what concert is being aired) evening!

went for another 42km cycling trip on good friday..

went anti clockwise this time! so it's siglap park connector first haha

yeah this was wtf the PCN went across an overhead bridge that was bike-unfriendly so we took a short detour to the traffic light like 300m away

now that i look back on outfield i wonder why i was so weak =\ i actually broke down and teared (didnt cry out loud thankfully) the cold was really unbearable and the feeling of your muscles turning off and your body malfunctioning is really scary...

i'm really glad that i had buddies to push me on, and the thought of someone to pull me through, but i'm really traumatised now =\ when i got caught in the rain just now i felt really scared and ran like mad for the nearest shelter..just to avoid the traumatising experience i had..i thought i was strong enough to do field camp, and let it make me stronger, but why did it end up leaving a horrible scar? sigh depressing thoughts

but then i look back again, and i think about the 3rd day, when all the excused upper limb pple risk dislocating their shoulders and elbows just to help their fellow companymates fill up their shellscrapes..it was quite heartwarming and i participated, which also explains why i didnt feel cold although we were doing so in the rain..the company spirit is really there!

sigh sorry about the emo post..just some post field camp reflections? considering that i had the previlege to go back to the bunk to slp and yet i failed so miserably mentally, i wonder if i can endure the cruel world out there =\

the toughest week of BMT is over! actually to me BMT is as good as over! it feels really gd (:

bed 1: Shaun
quiet guy i dont really know him well yet, but he's a great bunk IC! thanks for being the keymaster for our bunk!

bed 2: Ting Kun
horny guy who likes building up his tits -.- but he's really damn strong he can like chiong push ups equivalent to the rest of the bunk's push ups added up together!got confined for dirty rifle..quite unfortunate huh! also rmb that time before standy area he was like "how to u make the bedsheet as tight as a pussy?"

bed 3: Jun Yan
haha a cheekopek sinseh looking guy we all call sinseh (i mean, duh) at loggerheads with bed 7 daryl xD calls him dino because of the latters impulsive and verbally violent nature..haha i rmb this the most "this is the fucking army!!! not the fucking jurassic park!!!" damn pro at chinese chess also..owns everyone else!

bed 4: Ian
also known as polarbear, beacuse he was the polarbear for our polarbear game that day in bunk, and also his physical resemblences (no offence xD) rather impulsive, but quite a nice guy to talk to actually...thanks for the bakwa! fellow bandit too..a clarrie xD also the bunk game IC who sets rules for the retarded bunk games we invent..borrows my se fen also!

bed 5: Kenny
also known as our great leader Kuan Yew (his chinese name, no kidding) but too bad his surname is not Lee (although our bunk is made of like 70% Lees) has a girl he likes but doesnt dare to confess to her so we gave him tips like the jaywalk and grab her hand method (i know it's drama, but it works) likes singing chinese pop out of the blue and one of the MVP for Defence of the Lockers (aka. DotL) and for some reason is a very good blower (this sounds wrong but heck) and he's the bunk champion for When the Cold Wind Blows (another retarded bunk game)

bed 6: Jonathan
ex choir guy who sings bass..which explains why he goes down the octave when singing cadences during marching..has a really hot bod with muscles of the right size in the right places xD still rmb when he did this sexy lying down pose that was like really hot and ting kun almost fell in love with it xD

bed 7: Daryl
also known as Dino, explained above..can be quite blur at times, and admittedly quite fun to suan but aiya i think the bunk quite bad to him i feel slightly sorry for him haha xD eats alot but he's still so skinny!!! (HMM THIS SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE...)

bed 8: Marco
another horny guy who knows the names of japanese porn stars by heart..will be getting a fleshlite from our bunk as his bday present (which coincidentally, his bday is on POC day) he has a girlfriend who is a hornist hoho! he likes talking to fellow hongkie sergeant mark in canto haha! sleeps beside me..

bed 9: Jinjun
i'm not going to be another marco and like do self praise =p ..hmm a guy who randomly identifies planes that fly over tekong and disturbs his bunkmates with his horrible trumpet playing? has a habit of falling in first after meals...got saboed to be platoon Ic for the outfield week..let's hope he does a good job?

bed 10: Lucious
my buddy! but it'll be quite sad that he'll be sleeping alone outfield in the basha beacuse i'm probably going back to bunk every night to sleep thanks to excuse staying outfield..another guy who is horny but doesnt show it openly other than his discussions with marco about jap porn stars (help i'm caught in between) softballer which is also why he's another MVP for DotL

bed 11: Zijian
the only guy i knew before hand in my bunk due to same PE class and soccer, quite interesting because he was given pes C due to his shortness, and has a really good blog filled with funny photosopped pictures that are, i must say, really professionally done! has a really unique and infectious laughter!

bed 12: Gek Soon
a really blur kia who has a bochap attitude about NS, but occasionally comes up with funny ideas..quite a nice guy actually..and his marching has improved! sad to say he's like easily bullied because of his blurness..and he doesnt mix well with the section, and doesnt participate much...

bed 13: Dexter
really funny boy who likes cracking lame jokes (like me) quite entertaining and nice guy! also quite pro at chinese chess..probably second only to jun yan! likes to suan me about how i can identify planes, just like marco! lively guy who adds alot of dynamics to our bunk xD and for some reason he likes canon in D alot and keeps bugging me to play it on my trumpet -.-

gotta buy rifle sling later -.-
